North Carolina Green Party Hits Home Run at the National Annual Meeting

The NC Greens hosted the Annual National Meeting of the Green Party of the United States from July 23 to July 26th at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina. Although a smaller meeting than past ANMs, the meeting was considered a great success by the national party. The workshops were of high quality and generally well-attended. The plenary sessions were focused and produced direction for the party in the coming year. And it was profitable, generating the highest revenue of any national meeting since 2000. Many people worked hard to make this meeting a success, and the national party recognized this in a message from GPUS director Brent MacMillan.

In addition to the Annual Meeting committee members from the national party, several state members stand out for their contributions to the success of the meeting. From the Triangle Area, Theresa El-Amin acted as the liaison to the GPUS Black Caucus, and was instrumental in coordinating numerous details for the meeting, not the least of which was obtaining information for visitors from the Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau.  Ed King and his host of volunteers, including Anne Wolfley, Dick Paddock, Theresa, and Susan O'Neil, managed 6 successive days of making sure people got to and from the airport, train and bus stations, hotels, and the Ruffin dormitory. Dick and Marcia Everett (Harnett County) provided help and support throughout the meeting with the innumerable on site tasks. Susan and Jan Martell stocked the NCGP table, and Jan created and printed wildly popular buttons, which were almost all consumed.

George Friday of Gastonia, Co-Chair of the state party, acted as a moderator at the Friday afternoon health care forum, and lent her expertise as an organizer and coordinator to the entire meeting process. Nick Triplett of Charlotte developed and maintained a beautiful meeting website that received many complements from national delegates and visitors

The fund raising event on Saturday, July 25th was also a huge success, with help from George Friday, Dick Paddock, Anne Wolfley, Susan O'Neil, Elena Everett, Samiron Dutta, Jan Martell, Larry Abbott and David Ireland. The outstanding cooking and catering of Vimala Rajendran, along with entertainment from ThaTruth and The Fruit of Labor Singing Ensemble made the event. Many thanks to George Martin and George Friday for
acting as MCs, and to Kat Swift and Jesse Johnson for addressing the assemble between acts.

I am sure I have missed some people, and that oversight is not intended to minimize their efforts, but is instead a function of my faulty recall. My apologies to any such persons, please feel free to correct my errors by contacting me.

Our thanks also to all who attended. This meeting was important for many reasons, not the least of which is that we are energized to tackle the many challenges facing us with new confidence and an assurance that we can succeed.

Join us as the NCGP moves forward to offer the a vital and viable political alternative to the current government by cronyism that afflicts the state and the nation.
