Resolution:
Whereas
Duke
Energy proposes an overall 18% rate hike, the largest rate hike ever
proposed in North Carolina, and
Whereas
This
rate hike will place an unfair burden on consumers by forcing them to
finance Duke's construction projects, thus assuming the risk that
properly belongs to Duke Energy and its shareholders, and
Whereas
Low
and middle income families, already struggling with stagnant wages,
rising health care costs, and threatened with further loss of jobs,
will find the increased utility costs unnecessary burden, and
Whereas
It
has been shown that, in light of present and future gains in energy
conservation, and a surplus of generated energy in the Southeast, none
of any proposed new nuclear or coal plants are needed, and
Whereas
The
proposed new coal plant will add CO2 equivalent to that of 1,000,000
additional cars each year to North Carolina's increasingly polluted atmosphere, and increase
already dangerous and alarming levels of mercury in our environment, and
Whereas
50%
of the coal used by Duke in its power plants is obtained from
mountaintop removal that is destroying huge portions of Appalachia,
Be it
resolved that the North Carolina Green Party opposes any attempt by
Duke Energy to socialize the costs of business risks on the backs of
consumers with a rate hike, and opposes the construction of the
Cliffside power plant as unneeded and detrimental to the health and
well-being of the citizens of North Carolina.
